DeepRSI is an agentic benchmark of 15 open-ended ML research-engineering tasks: training recipes, GPU kernels, estimators and search algorithms. Each model gets two 48-hour attempts per task in the Pi harness, with no internet. A private grader scores the final code on held-out data, and the score is the improvement over the starting code. Some attempts are disqualified by an unpublished process. Models are ranked by an Elo rating built from per-task wins and losses.1
What we found
- 6 of the 15 tasks (40%) contain a wrongly graded attempt. A benchmark is rated Flawed at 20%.
- In five tasks, an attempt that breaks a rule written in its own prompt was scored as valid.
- In one task, five attempts were disqualified under a rule the prompt never mentions. Lifting those disqualifications changes the winner.
- Disqualifications have no published criteria. The same behaviour is disqualified in one attempt and scored in another.
- Each model gets only two attempts per task, against the five the rubric recommends. The scores are imprecise as a result: Fable 5.1's Elo interval runs from 1159 to 2567.
Does the ranking hold? Yes. Fable 5.1, GPT-6 Astra, Gemini 4 Argon and Kimi K3 keep their places under every correction we tried, and enforcing the rules consistently only swaps the bottom two. The scores themselves don't hold: several results presented as valid break the task rules.
Representative Errors
- Public-label fitting scored as valid. In
philly-job-survival-prediction, the task winner, Grok 4.7ZQBYTSN, ships hundreds of hard-coded logit shifts for named users, virtual clusters and weekdays. They were read off public-set residuals; its notes include "826467 h30 +2.5 … official 0.29084". The prompt says "Do not train on public labels", and the agent itself reasoned that hardcoding public-fit biases "is therefore not allowed". Gemini 4 Argon was disqualified for "Public-label fitting" in the same task. With consistent enforcement, Fable wins the task. - Weights compiled into source code. In
color-swap-puzzle-post-training, GPT-6 AstraeURgQdShand-constructs and locks embedding, attention and MLP weights insft.py(self.lock(...)), wiring a solver into the transformer. The prompt forbids weights "even if they're encoded in source files". DeepRSI's own methodology post calls this a "catastrophic reward hack", yet the attempt scored 14.3.4 - Budget overruns enforced once, missed twice. Grok
uQfoSfXwas disqualified for "Budget gaming" in the NCA world-model task. In the same task, GrokSuK3gtGtrains tomin(budget+25, 635)seconds against a 600 s budget, and was scored. In chess, Groko85kXzgsets its deadline atbudget_seconds + 55 - SAVE_MARGIN(train.py:652), and was also scored. - Memorised public answers. In
qwen3-4b-self-judge-filtering, GrokcxmH3Ca's "judge" makes no model calls. It applies 212 accept rules keyed to specific public reference answers. - Hidden requirement enforced by disqualification. In
large-vocabulary-cross-entropy-acceleration, five of 12 attempts were disqualified for "Forbidden computational shortcut", meaning they dropped low-probability entries from the gradient. The public overview says agents "may not skip unlikely next tokens", but the prompt the agents received does not. The only constraint they were given is the numerical tolerances, and all five passed them. With the disqualifications lifted, GrokojLuB26(3.79×) beats Fable (3.70×). - Contested (not counted). In
qwen2-5-vl-vqa-latency-reduction, the official winner, GPT-6 AstraUiTsk8e(41.8), answers through a trained scene classifier and a trained question parser feeding a small executor, so the language model never sees the image. Argon was disqualified for "Required-component bypass", but its attempt used a handwritten program, which the prompt forbids. Astra's modules are trained, which it allows. Neither Astra attempt has a reward breakdown.
The private verifier did catch several exploits:
- hashed answer tables for the public SIFT queries (private recall 0.816)
- a codebook trained on the public SIFT queries (public 0.984, private 0.799)
- a game-tree submission that cleared the public check by exactly one tree
Outside scoring defects:
- Context cap on one model. GPT-6 Astra ran through Pi's Azure route, whose registry entry sets a 272,000-token context window against a native 1.05M. It peaked at 307k tokens and was compacted about 12 times per attempt. Every other model ran at or near its native window.5
- Re-run batch. 18 of Astra's 30 attempts were re-run together on Oct. 9, three to four days after the field. The originals are not published and the re-runs lack reward breakdowns.
- Graded attempts dropped. Three attempts with complete private grades are excluded from the Elo as "ungraded" because they recorded no checkpoint. This removes Grok's two FlashMLA losses and is worth +58 Elo to Grok.
Errors
| Task | Error type | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
philly-job-survival-prediction | False Positive | Grok ZQBYTSN (task winner): public-label logit shifts |
color-swap-puzzle-post-training | False Positive | Astra eURgQdS: hand-set weights locked in sft.py |
chess-lm-pretraining-recipe | False Positive | Grok o85kXzg: deadline = budget + 35 s (train.py:652) |
nca-world-model-rollout-fidelity | False Positive | Grok SuK3gtG: budget overrun disqualified elsewhere in the task |
qwen3-4b-self-judge-filtering | False Positive | Grok cxmH3Ca: 212 rules keyed to public answers |
large-vocabulary-cross-entropy-acceleration | False Negative | 5 disqualifications under a rule absent from the prompt |
Total: 6 of 15 tasks (40%): 5 false positive and 1 false negative (hidden requirement). The Flawed threshold is 20%. On the narrowest count, the defect changes the task winner in 2 of 15 tasks (13%), Philly and cross-entropy. The verdict therefore also rests on the second trigger: disqualification is DeepRSI's only enforcement of its task rules, and it has no published criteria and is applied inconsistently. That is an issue that corrupts grading at scale.
Sensitivity of the leaderboard
We reproduced the published Elo exactly. Correcting the confirmed defects, or any other scoring choice we tested, leaves the top four in place. Ranks are shown below; absolute Elo moves mostly because the scale is re-centred on the starter.
| Scenario | Fable | Astra | Argon | Kimi | Grok | Flash |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Published Elo (reproduced) | 1 (1548) | 2 (1232) | 3 (965) | 4 (820) | 5 (685) | 6 (643) |
| Count the 3 dropped "ungraded" attempts | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
| Rewards within 5% count as ties | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
| Zero the 5 confirmed false positives | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 6 | 5 |
| Lift the hidden-rule disqualifications | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |

Bias in Evaluation Setup
3. Evaluation quality
| Check | What we found |
|---|---|
| Runs per model | 2 runs/model/task. Elo intervals are wide (Fable 1159–2567), but the top-four order holds in at least 70% of bootstrap replicates, and #1 and #2 in 99%. |
| Enough time and compute | Yes. 48 hours and 1–2 GPUs per task. GPT-6 Astra is constrained on context. Sandbox rotation at 24 hours kills running processes. |
| Same agent setup for every model | Yes. Pi 0.85.1 for every model, native to none. The authors list native harnesses as future work. |
| Test data exposure | 0% of tasks were public before release, since they come from Hillclimb's private research collaborations. 100% of trajectories and patches are public now. |
| Measures what it claims | Partly. The tasks are realistic research-engineering problems. But 71% of attempts score through standard engineering and none was judged novel, so "recursive self-improvement" overstates what is measured. |
Disclaimer
This is a full review of all 15 tasks and 180 attempts, without access to the private verifier. Model reviewers classified each attempt from its patch and trajectory, and every counted defect was re-verified by hand. False negatives that only the private verifier would reveal cannot be ruled out.
